im sorry, i've been away for a few days.  A few other obligations i had to fulfill :)

i meant, can you outline what they should and shouldn't be able to do with the groups.  is it a matter of adding the groups to others, or just merely editing the groups (which is dangerous for security as well).

If you can explain your process a bit i may be able to think of a way to get it to fit

Okay.

I want a person with a mask that has the manage/assign membergroups mask to, for example, create an.. Advanced Member Mask.

They are unable to do that.

They are also unable to edit a mask to change the colors/userbars.

Should I try reimporting a copy of the database right after the move to SMF 2.0?

metallica48423

you could actually just do a straight upgrade (unless this is on a trial/test version)

I apoligize for the lack of response... i have been horribly busy with college exams and haven't been able to test this out at all.

So run the upgrade tool again?

metallica48423

the upgrade should be able to upgrade your database the first time it is ran.  You don't need to completely install a new forum to go to 2.0, you can simply upgrade the 1.1 forum to 2.0

More details on that can be found in the online manual -- http://docs.simplemachines.org

Trying to import an old smf_permissions gives me this error:
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 300 seconds exceeded in /usr/local/cpanel/base/3rdparty/phpMyAdmin/libraries/string_mb.lib.php on line 47

metallica48423

if you're already running it, then trying to import an old un-upgraded database will break your forum.

No, I was trying to import a SMF 2.0 Beta 3 version of smf_permissions from a board backup I took two weeks back.

metallica48423

how big is your board?  it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to do this.

you might google a utility called 'bigdump' -- its a staggered mysql database importer -- it avoids the timeout issues that web scripts often have.

The DB is 286.07 mb. Like 81k messages.

metallica48423

yeah... you'll probably have to use bigdump to do it.

unfortunately many hosts' setup prevents you from being able to send that much data via POST, meaning that you can't upload the whole folder, or the actual execution of it takes longer than max upload time (seems to be 300 seconds here)

It's annoying when all I wanna do is just reupload the permissions file -_-

metallica48423

Indeed it is annoying, but that is how most hosts set things up.

Have you tried importing only that table? (smf_permissions, that is)

Yeah, that is when I get the taking more than 300 seconds error.

metallica48423

Ahh, gotcha.  In some ways though bigdump is better because it is much more simple to use than phpmyadmin, for example.

So I should just run bigdump.php (but drop smf_permissions first), and see if that works?
