Upgrading from 1.1.4 doesn't work.

I downloaded the upgrade package, and overwrote all files from it to my forum folder.

But every time I try to use upgrade.php, I get this message:

         The upgrader was unable to find some crucial files.

Please make sure you uploaded all of the files included in the package, including the Themes, Sources, and other directories.              

I've tried reuploading the files 3 times now, and yet it still doesn't go away.

Are you sure they have the right file properties too? How do I use chmod?

Also make sure you uploaded
- index.php
- upgrade SQL files too

Yep all files are there, and all have correct permissions.

Or could I do something else? Would it be possible to install a free version of 2.0, then change the database information in settings.php, and run the upgrade.php file?

Obviously I'd have to put the upgrade and SQL  files there myself, but would it work?

Okay so i tried installing 1.1.4, then making some posts.

Then I installed 2.0, and put the upgrade etc into the folder.

I ran the upgrade, and it kind of works. However on the first backup step, it just stops. It says backing up attachments (which there are none) and the continue button is constantly greyed out.

My host is running PHP as CGI, could this be the problem? Any way to get around it?

are you running the upgrade in debug mode so it might generate a more meaningful error when it dies?

What about your error logs (preferably the apache error logs)?

with no solid error all we have to really go on is guesswork to see what might be causing the issue.

As for your prior issue... is it possible you're not being allowed to fully overwrite everything due to ownership settings?  What i'd try doing is this, take a file backup first, just so you have one if you need it, then delete everything in the Sources and everything in the Themes folder, delete index.php and SSI.php ***LEAVE Settings.php THERE***.  Leave the rest so your attachments and such are in place.  Then, upload all the files from the 2.0 package.  Ideally this should ensure that everything is the new file... if you get denied trying to delete the files then you have an ownership issue

Another, though faint and unlikely, possibility: if you have old/outdated language files or your defaults are incompatible language sets (right now, basically anything other than english) it may fail -- i'd need to do more testing though to see if this is a bug or not, but this was the cause of issues in my last upgrade

Everything is English / up to date with the languages.

I have no permission issues, all of the uploading worked fine. That can also been seen from when the install went ahead on the fresh install.

I've retried it many times, and every time I get the same error, although I do not get any apache errors.

what happens to the mods when you upgrade from 1.1.4 to 2.0?

they are overwritten.  1.1.x mods, generally, won't work with 2.0

No I haven't unfortunately

This whole thing has left my database pretty shaken up... For some reason now the forums aren't appearing in the order they should. If I go into the boards area of the admin panel, it shows them ordered like they should be, but one or two forums are appeared in the wrong position :S

If I can sort that out ^^ I'll be willing to let somebody go in and have a look if they are able to

try going into admin > boards, click modify next to a board, don't change anything, but save it.

It should force the rest of the boards back into order

All the times I have been trying, it's been to upgrade to SMF 2.0 Beta 2 [I THINK, it's been so long since I tried it. It's the first release of the new 2.0 beta version].

Okay.  Download the upgrade archive for 2.0 Beta 3.1.

Open up Upgrade.php

Find:

Change to:
