Is Beta 4 due or is it still a way off ? (yes presuming it will be a beta)

It's still some way off to be honest. Bug wise we're doing very well - but we're trying to get the new templates in place which is requiring a lot of work to get right; once done though the rest of the releases should flow nicely.

So just curious, will the next SMF 2 release will expected to be beta 4 or RC1? (Not counting some emergency release like Beta 3.1.)

Yes, Beta 4. We cannot realistically change all the templates and call it an RC IMHO.

Are the templates the last thing to be done and tested in beta before an RC comes out then ?
