Well, the email address set in my forum settings is a GMail account, and the SMTP seems to be working fine in it with those settings. Mind if I go in and fiddle with your settings, Optic?

OK, it's now not working again -_-... maybe I need to talk to my host.

but now I get this error message:

Lainaa2: fsockopen(): php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known
File: /home/ryux/public_html/an/Sources/Subs-Post.php
Line: 556

I am also getting this error message, but only when someone sends a PM or start a thread (though the thread still gets posted). All other features (no reports otherwise) are working.   I am wondering what you did to correct this. I have tried reading through this post, but it appears that there were multiple issues being dealt with here.
Thanks for the help!

Again, this means the SMTP server name is either wrong or the server is down.  Basically, PHP can't figure out what server it is - it's trying to find it and there's no server with that name.

It's the same sort of error you'd get if you went to www.thisdomaindoesnotexist.com.  So, the SMTP server you've entered either does not exist or is temporarily down.  Check for stray spaces or typos.

gmail requires an SSL connection for it's SMTP outgoing mail... don't know if that means anything..

*edit* I'm having the same problem with gmail....

[Unknown]

Use "ssl://" for the domain name - e.g. ssl://smtp.gmail.com...

I get this...

fsockopen(): no SSL support in this build

that's a quick fix... but I'd like to use this hosting... and there should be a way to do it... I'm just too dumb to figure it out.. I could change hosting... or setup my own mail server... but I'd like for my gmail to work..

*edit* any thoughts?

Your PHP build doesn't have OpenSSL support.  It is not really possible to do SMTP communications with Gmail in SSL with it like this.
