sendmail and smtp Not working.

Sendmail for the e-mail validation isn't working for me... I tried sending an e-mail to myself, and many others, and it did not work.

Then I tried using smtp, but it didn't work either. Upon looking at the error logs, I found this at the same time I used smtp:

Ran into problems sending Mail. Error: 502 Error: command not implemented

I take it that it's a problem on my side, on the server? =(

Any help would greatly be appreciated. I'm using SMF 1.0

Also, I can provide a link to a PHP page with the phpinfo() command in it... would that help? ^^

andrea

A link to your forum and phpinfo would be helpful.

phpinfo looks normal to me.

I registered testwise as user "andrea" in your forum and -of course- did not recieve the activation email. Can you please activate my account and make the user a temporary administrator? I will then double check your forum settings.

Also, I checked my error logs again and noticed these: (they appeared around the time I was looking through the packages options in the Admin CP. I don't know if it's related or not)

Maybe your host has disabled emails generated by scripts? Is it a free host? Can you ask your host? Maybe your host offers a FAQ page which contains useful information?

I'll check with my host. And I don't think it's a free host... I shall check.

Thanks for the help so far. ^^;

Jedi_Amara

Our host (I'm hosted by the host and I host Optic's site) is... not great for support right at the moment. www.intellecthost.com But I can check the SMTP settings for him.

Jedi_Amara

... The activation thing isn't working for my site either, also hosted on same server/domain(forum.ryux.net)

[Unknown]

Try using the SMTP *WITHOUT* specifying a username or password.  Just the hostname and port.

Jedi_Amara

Thanks very much. It worked. Optic, for your purposes, the server is mail.ryux.net and the port 25.

Hmmm... no, still not working. =(

Can anyone make out this error message? =/

LainaaRan into problems sending Mail. Error: 550 client.

Any help again would greatly be appreciated.

[Unknown]

550 means relaying denied.  Have you made sure the email address in the Server Settings page corresponds to the server you're using?  It must; otherwise you'll get a 550.

-[Unknown]

Optic

OK, so that means I can't use the SMTP settings JA posted since the e-mail I put in Server Settings is my ISP one... =/

So I changed my SMTP settings to correspond to my ISP e-mail settings... it worked for sometime, but now I get this error message:

Lainaa2: fsockopen(): php_network_getaddresses: getaddrinfo failed: Name or service not known
File: /home/ryux/public_html/an/Sources/Subs-Post.php
Line: 556

Please, any help would REALLY be appreciated!

And I'm helping....

The address you entered isn't being found; are you sure it's correct?  You can test it by trying to ping it, like so:

Start -> Run -> type "cmd" -> type "ping mail.isp.net" in the big black box and hit enter.

For example, I use SBC.  So, I get this:
D:\Documents and Settings\Unknown>ping smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com

Pinging smtp-sbc-v1.mail.vip.sc5.yahoo.com [66.163.171.137] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.163.171.137: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=244
Reply from 66.163.171.137: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=244
Reply from 66.163.171.137: bytes=32 time=31ms TTL=244
Reply from 66.163.171.137: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=244

Ping statistics for 66.163.171.137:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 29ms, Maximum = 31ms, Average = 29ms

However, the error message you're getting means it's not working... like this:
D:\Documents and Settings\Unknown>ping doesntexist.simplemachines.org
Ping request could not find host doesntexist.simplemachines.org. Please check the name and try again.

But even if it goes through, it may be that you're using a POP server, not an SMTP server.  You may have to check with your ISP to get the correct settings.  Just remember that you're looking for the "SMTP" or "outgoing" server address.

Optic

*sigh* Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

Unfortunantly, I'm still getting the same error, despite getting a positive response by using the ping command in a Command Prompt.

I tried using two different SMTP servers, and I still get the same error message I mentioned before. It appears whenever the forum has to send an e-mail... e.g. notifications, when a new user tries to register, etc.

Would you like to take a look at my forum and maybe test some settings? I'm starting to have a feeling that maybe something is wrong with my SMF installation. When I check the versions of the files though, they appear to be ok... SMF 1.0 and 1.0.

[Unknown]

It's possible your server could be configured not to allow you to use outside SMTP servers (so as to prevent spamming.)  Have you asked your host about this?

They may provide you with an SMTP server or even sendmail (one you can use, even.)
