I'm still using YaBB and recently had to make my forum members only access. The problem is I want guests to be able to browse and read the boards and topics but not allowed to post, vote or anything like that.

I tried to search for information on smf as to this feature but I couldn't get a search criteria right that delivered those results so please forgive me if this is redundant.

Basically, the feature is to allow guests to read only, not ban them completely like YaBB does currently. In order to post, one must become a member.

Yes. This is possible. You should really download a test copy of smf. The permission system might surprise you.
