Simply asked, is there a way to set up a scheduled task that does the database backup function?

If this is not possible immediately, could someone point me to where I could find the backup script so I could put it into a cron job?

There isn't any functionality to do that currently.
It isn't impossible, but would need some coding/a mod.

I don't think SMF's existing backup functionality can be automated.  I think it requires manual interaction.
I haven't seen any other backup scripts floating around that could be called via CRON or tied into smf's scheduling system.

Not without a good amount of code changing

Many hosts, however, do offer backup options.  Many cPanel hosts also have utilities to do an automatic backup on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.

I'm not using cPanel. I have a clean fc8 install on my server. I can set up a cron job to do it - but I was just seeing if there was a simple way to do it within SMF.

Assuming this is a no go?

not with the way the backup currently works, no.  The backup does not save onto the server... it may not be hard to create a completely new scheduled task to do it that is completely unrelated to the backup options but it is beyond my ability... i'd reccommend posting in Mod Requests for that though.
