what are you trying to add?  theres several shoutbox/chat mods (though i wouldn't reccommend putting a chat applet on your boardindex) on the custom.simplemachines.org site.

If you want more specific details you're going to need to mention the specific area where you want the text to go!

Shure it is possible.
Go to admin > current theme > index.template.php
Then put your text in place where you want it.
Please be adviced that a bit of knowledge of html and php is required.

we need to know where on the page or in the header it needs to be in order to be able to guide where the changes need to be made.  Otherwise, the only thing we can tell you is /Themes/default/index.template.php (of course replacing default with which theme you're using.

Well you've not been very helpful in your details, to help us help you.

But in your DEFAULT CORE index.template.php file look for:

You can add whatever you like below that and it will display just below the menu buttons on your 'homepage'.
