I use Nuke as "contant management system" with phpBB and gallery.
Nuke just to have nice frontpage,
phpBB is the most used service
Gallery, cause there was not any easy way to add pics to public..

Can SMF be used this way? Is SMF better? If is how and why?
How to manage current users and data to be used if changed to SMF?

Well nuke does looks nice, im not sure what the current bridge status is with it. But i do know SMf can be made as its own CMS http://simplemachines.org/community/ssi_examples.php you have that in all SMF installs and it may help you.

phpBB isnt as good as SMF in my opinion, i like some of the features with SMF especially the News feature without it I dont feel my forums are complete and easy modification adding makes things great. Theming is pretty easy to grasp when you take your time and are interested in it. The community here is good and its always. Gallery? Well i havent heard of this but I know that there is a way to integrate Coppermine into SMF and run that, also you could allow users to upload attachements and it automatically displays the picture in the message.

Can SMF be used in this way? - Yes but not quite the same.
Is SMF Better? - In my opinion yes for certain features, its an opinion you need to make by yourself.
IF is  how and why?  - see my little paragraphs above.

There are a number of convertors that can be used. http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php?converters

Are you running nuke alone or integrated with phpBB?

Also you may wish to check out MAMBO (www.mamboserver.com) there is a great support on both sides for integration with SMF and it.

Thanks for your help!!

Nuke seems to be too "heavy" for my needs - just need frontpage to be able show menus, news and static info.. and forum. If pics can be added direct to the forum topics its all I need. And probably an alternative gallery/albums for picture sets (tens of pics about same happening) or it that also easy to handle with SMF?

phpBB and Nuke (integrated) has some strange features which causes some administration with user rights etc. and I don't like the way these two are integrated..

Is there any differences about efficiency of handling queries etc. between Nuke/phpBB vs. SMF

Also need to check out MAMBO (www.mamboserver.com)

But in anyway just looking something faster, lighter and "easier" to admin instead nuke.

(link to the current setup: http://karavaanari.info -pages in Finnish, layout is too simple - but users don't like any fancy features - even integrated gallery is full of pics posted just by me...)

I would like to think SMF is more efficient than PHP-Nuke/PostNuke, partially because it's not even a portal.  They're hard to compare.

Coppermine Gallery can be integrated with SMF.

I would definitely recommend looking at Mambo ;).

Thanks... just not really sure that "portal" is what I need  ;)
Just a way to have nice "frontpage" with some news, stories, menus, links etc.
Multiple forums to serve different things (ordinary forum, forum with pics, forum with FAQ / copied manuals etc.) Btw, how attachments are handled - e.g. pics? Is there tool to manage size etc.. within SMF
Efficient way to handle user rights and member management within different forums..

Later there might be even need for an small "on-line-shop" - but there is no need to integrate that with anything else.. I thing
