Hello
I Would Like To Add A ChatRoom That  Intergrates With SMF, Preferably A Mod. Flashchat Is Good But I Want Something That's Free.

Thanks

Thanks For The Links. I Have Already Installed Nnenneeoo's Shoutbox, And The IRC Chat Would Be Good But If I Connected To An IRC Server That Is Not My Own It WOuld Have Most IRC Channels Already Used.

Also I WOuld Like A Chat That Could Have Multiple Chatrooms In The One Thing.

Hi
The Mibbit Chat Isn't What I Want. I Want It To Be Like sparkpea.net And The Koach.com Chatrooms Or Something Like That.

Nither sparkpea.net or koach.com provide you with multiple rooms in the one window, Mibbit does. You could set up a 'chat button' to direct your users to either of those sites, but your users will have to log-in manually.

It is unlikely you will get everything you want, you need to decide what you want as a priority sorted before people can best advise you.

The link wasn't so much a link to Mibbit, its more a discussion on whats there for SMF users, Mibbit came out on top. there are relatively few SMF 'interfaces' to chat packages.

Check out phpfreechat, I have it currently bridge with my smf 2.0 and its working out just fine.

Unfortunately phpFreeChat is a server side application as is FlashChat, in other words YOU run it on YOUR server, the major drawback is that it uses your servers resources, so if you want to expand to more that perhaps ~50 concurrent users you need to be looking elsewhere.

I'd recommend using IRC chat. Every other chat script makes many requests to your web server which will often either use up your bandwidth allocation or get your account disabled for high CPU utilisation.

There are many quiet IRC servers where you will have a choice of almost every channel and username :).

Namecheap (domains)
Fastmail (e-mail)
Linode (VPS)

Gotta agree with 'H' on this one, all that's needed is an "all singing all dancing" Mod to let us use whats already out there, a few mods come close, but we're not there yet.

....again X7 is a 'server side' application, it WILL use your servers resources; OK for a limited number of users, but not so hot if you want to expand.

The X7's demand on your server is discussed HERE

They do however now produce an X7 Lite Edition that's remotely hosted. Note the number one selling point of their Lite Edition "Your bandwidth and server resources are not consumed" it kinda says it all about X7.

It just didn't do it for me, I will be looking elsewhere.

Had a host moaning at me the otherday because shoutbox was using 27% of the servers resources!

I think the level of integration and desires are more than you'll be able to get out of a 'stock' application joshuam08.  At the very least you are looking at some decent coding hours, which if someone was to put in that time and effort it wouldn't be for free, and they'd probably be able to market it.

Creating a link to a preferred IRC server and channel is probably the best way to go, but then you don't have the control of integration.  But I'm not sure what you are hoping to achieve via integration.  Other than username and account already created.

If I can just follow up on Rumbaar's post, I don't want to sound like I'm singing the praises of Mibbit because its not without it's shortcomings. But what the Mibbit Mod does is provide the means of connecting to ANY IRC server, and the layout is configurable so you can match your own color scheme, that coupled with your forum members accounts being able to log in directly and negligible demand on your servers resources is probably as good as it gets at the moment.

There's been quite a few mod's to various chat mod's done since this question was raised, any new verdicts on what's seen as the best all-round chat mod now?

With something like this and a third party and not directly linked to SMF forum software it's all about personal preference.  Where it's ease of use, integration and cost are factors for each individual.
