well the upgrade from SE to SMF is pretty much seamless I'd guess... very easy... also, its not actually out yet...
As for mods... well no doubt ALOT of them will be standard features... and the good ones will no doubt be ported over pretty quickly as well.

And SMF promises "seamless mod aplication" or something ;)

_.-=[SHIBBY]=-._

hmmm i think i might upgrade when i think everything has calmed down... when will that upgrade be realeased
hxxp:1337agents.com [nonactive]

Tyris

as yet they're not saying anything :P

but basically the second Beta is available to the charter members (I think).
And after this private beta... there will be a public beta (or maybe another private one...)
My personal guess is that a public copy (beta) will be available mid-November, to maybe early December... but thats just a hopeful guess (hopeful coz my exams end mid-November and I'll be able to get modding with SMF ;))

James Woodcock

Well SMF even in BETA stages is shaping up to be the ultimate forum on the internet and my upgrade from YaBB SE was very simple.

Be very wise to consider waving the SMF flag in the future ;)

What sort of MODS are you looking for to be added to a SMF forum then that you feel are useful that have been on your YaBB SE install?

_.-=[SHIBBY]=-._

i0 think im g0nna keep wat i have right now and stick with it for a while cause ive just now gotten used to it and im not ready to switch

So, I'm curious...

Is SMF a version of Yabbs? Or is it a clone? Or is it a mod? Or is it competition to Yabbs?

I've got a Yabbs running, fairly new, but I must say I like the clean look to SMF. I had a heck of a time finding help on the Yabbs site.. although once I found the right spot, help was very quick.

In any event, I have an interest in a special feature of SMF. I'm told that SMF will allow me to appoint a moderator to a specific TOPIC area. I've looked through this board for that but haven't seen it. Can someone show me?

I'd love your comments regarding the comparision between the two.

I AM a Canadian.. so... ;D

David

SMF is the next step in the YaBB SE eveolution.  YaBB SE will be discontinued with the first public release of SMF.

PeterL

Thanks for that... can you confirm the moderator question I asked?

Thanks

Peter

David

In both YaBB SE and SMF you can appoint moderators on a board by board basis.  With SMF you can even appoint a membergroup as a moderator for a certain board but I do not believe they will be listed as moderators, they will just have the moderator powers.

PeterL

Excuse me for beating this to death, but I still am unclear.

Today I posted a question on the YABBS help forum regarding moderators. I have a user who started a new topic, within a board on my YABBS. I'd like her to moderate THAT topic and only that topic.

[Unknown] was kind enough to reply and told me that YABBS will not allow that. But he also mentioned that SMF would!

That's why I'm here today, pondering switching to SMF.

I hope that's clear, but if not, I don't blame you, because I'm not certain I understand. My last experience with a BBS was an old 5 line PCBoard.

Thanks

Peter

David

Do you have the URL to the thread on the YaBB SE thread?  I was unaware someone could be appointed a moderator of a specific thread with SMF but Unknown is one of the lead developers and thus if he says so I would believe him.

PeterL

Yup here's the thread URL...

http://www.yabbse.org/community/index.php?board=133;action=display;threadid=26045;start=0#msg177500

I've been reading the other threads here and am now pretty much convinced I should switch to SMF.

Thanks so much for your help.

If I pay for a charter membership, will someone at SMF convert my YABBS to SMF?

Thanks

Peter

PeterL

So, I wonder HOW one would appoint a moderator to one topic, or to one thread...

Peter

Someone will probably assist, however, the releases are only in alpha and you'd probably want to wait until a public release is out.

PeterL

Nope... I'll buy membership...

I'm far too much of a born-again newbie to handle this myself.

Now, give me a DOS batch file to build, and I'm your man....

sigh...

Oh, I definitely recommend the membership and having them upgrade it -- my point was you might want to hold out a few weeks more before you have them do it for a more stable release before you upgrade your live board.

Regards,
Jason

David

Yes, we will upgrade your current install to SMF but keep in mind that SMF is not considered a stable release.  IT is currenlty in a beta state and thus there will be bugs no matter how hard we try.  If you do upgrade just open a support ticket requesting the upgrade and include your FTP server information, MySQL username and password, and a user account logon for your forum.  One of our support staff will then upgrade your forum.

Okay, I think my response has somehow caused some amount of confusion...

What you CANNOT do:
Appoint a member moderator status over arbitrary topics.

What you CAN do:
Allow a member, or group of members, the ability to moderate topics they start.

While there is a distinct difference, it's a good step in the right direction, wouldn't you say?

DOS batch files all the way, man!  Yeah! (although I prefer NT batch files over DOS ones these days..)

-[Unknown]

PeterL

Ok, so I understand that it can be done, now I wanna know how.

Does one make the user a member of a unique member group and then give that group moderator status?

Woot! Another PCBoard sysop! I ran one from around 1986 to 1996 when the Internet took away all my users. OTOH, I've been running various websites since 1996 too. :)

BTW, if you ever ran DLTrimit on PCB, that was from me (Complications BBS).  :P

Amazing stuff, eh?

My first BBS was a single line OPUS board that I had in a little room I rented in downtown Toronto. It was running on a Cordata xt with 512K and a 20 meg hard drive. I thought the 1200 baud modem was a sceamer after the old 300.

I used to have the computer right next to my bed and when someone callled the board, I'd wake up, swing my feet out of bed and chat with them.

It was called The Taxi Stand and it was in the early 80's.

Ahh, good ol' BBS'  ;)

It was the freaking coolest thing in the world to hear that connection sound, although I never really did anything all that  exciting once connected.  I chatted with a guy on his setup once.  I think the name of the local one I'd connect to was Chewy Chunks or something like that.  ;)  ah, the good ol' days back before you could easily get on this here InterWeb thingy.

I think us BBS users and SysOps were the first folks to get on the Internet, and the first to use a web browser (outside of universities). I remember when it was extremely hard to find someone who would give you access to the Internet too... usually you had to beg. :)

I missed the 300 baud modems and started with a (very expensive) 1200 baud one. Running RBBS for the first few months until I discovered PCBoard. The nice thing about BBSes (and now our forums) are how closely knit the folks get after a while. A BBS was nothing without message boards, and was ultra-cool if they also had FidoNet. :)

If you think about it, most forum packages aren't much more than our old message boards were. Oh, they have a few more features, but the concept is the same. We just moved from local boards to worldwide ones. And like our BBSes, the forums were surrounded by a site. :)

The more things change, the more they stay the same!

Ahhh Michele, true, true...

The thing I find mind boggling now, is that the young people, both here and elsewhere are so knowledgeable. In the early eighties "I" was one of those youngsters who help those olders, and now here I am, relying on a young whippersnapper to help me...

Ah well, that's progress.
