Excuse me for beating this to death, but I still am unclear.

Today I posted a question on the YABBS help forum regarding moderators. I have a user who started a new topic, within a board on my YABBS. I'd like her to moderate THAT topic and only that topic.

[Unknown] was kind enough to reply and told me that YABBS will not allow that. But he also mentioned that SMF would!

That's why I'm here today, pondering switching to SMF.

I hope that's clear, but if not, I don't blame you, because I'm not certain I understand. My last experience with a BBS was an old 5 line PCBoard.

Thanks

Peter

Do you have the URL to the thread on the YaBB SE thread?  I was unaware someone could be appointed a moderator of a specific thread with SMF but Unknown is one of the lead developers and thus if he says so I would believe him.

Yup here's the thread URL...

http://www.yabbse.org/community/index.php?board=133;action=display;threadid=26045;start=0#msg177500

I've been reading the other threads here and am now pretty much convinced I should switch to SMF.

Thanks so much for your help.

If I pay for a charter membership, will someone at SMF convert my YABBS to SMF?

Thanks

Peter

PeterL

So, I wonder HOW one would appoint a moderator to one topic, or to one thread...

Someone will probably assist, however, the releases are only in alpha and you'd probably want to wait until a public release is out.

Nope... I'll buy membership...

I'm far too much of a born-again newbie to handle this myself.

Now, give me a DOS batch file to build, and I'm your man....

sigh...

Oh, I definitely recommend the membership and having them upgrade it -- my point was you might want to hold out a few weeks more before you have them do it for a more stable release before you upgrade your live board.

Regards,
Jason

David

Yes, we will upgrade your current install to SMF but keep in mind that SMF is not considered a stable release.  IT is currenlty in a beta state and thus there will be bugs no matter how hard we try.  If you do upgrade just open a support ticket requesting the upgrade and include your FTP server information, MySQL username and password, and a user account logon for your forum.  One of our support staff will then upgrade your forum.

Okay, I think my response has somehow caused some amount of confusion...

What you CANNOT do:
Appoint a member moderator status over arbitrary topics.

What you CAN do:
Allow a member, or group of members, the ability to moderate topics they start.

While there is a distinct difference, it's a good step in the right direction, wouldn't you say?

DOS batch files all the way, man!  Yeah! (although I prefer NT batch files over DOS ones these days..)

Ok, so I understand that it can be done, now I wanna know how.

Does one make the user a member of a unique member group and then give that group moderator status?

@echo off
c: & cd\ & cls
echo That's the basic idea, yeah... except you give that membergroup
echo permission to moderate their own topics.
echo (including delete, remove, and modify...)
echo.
echo It actually works rather well, imho.

Woot! Another PCBoard sysop! I ran one from around 1986 to 1996 when the Internet took away all my users. OTOH, I've been running various websites since 1996 too. :)

BTW, if you ever ran DLTrimit on PCB, that was from me (Complications BBS).  :P
