Lately I have been paying attention to who is online to see if I can catch a spammer before they do damage and usually it is stopped before it starts. My question is why is it just today there was a total of nearly 8 failed login attempts and yet nothing occured and now I see the status of that same ip as Logging into Forum. Now whether it is something I missed or something I am not paying attention I would appreciate the insight.

Also is there way to automatically ban an ip address for anything more then 3 failed login attempts or is it an attempt to overload it to bypass?

The Exact Error:
The requested identifier did not return the proper information.
?action=login2 over 8 times. ip address: 78.157.143.140

The client isn't submitting the correct information so SMF hasn't even attempted to verify the password :). Most likely it is a bot trying to login (perhaps with an account it created) but it has a bug somewhere

Thanks for the response, it is what I figured, I guess what I am trying to figure out is why OpenId is not working on my forum. I saw one user that I know trying to use his OpenId but it did not take. There another topic on this somewhere else? Or is there something else that needs to be consider when using v3.1 and enabling openid?

It is possible that SMF 2.0b4 will fix this problem when it is released to the public although I'm unsure as the changelog doesn't mention any bugfixes that should change your problem.

Which OpenID provider or script is the user using? :)
