Did you try opening up the ManageMaintenance.php file to check it?

yes i created the back up of my database
now how do i use that to get back my forum?

I believe the databases holds all of the info in the forum (i.e. posts, members, boards....)  I am not sure but in order to get it back up you might have to load a fresh copy of the page in question, ManageMaintenance.php.  Do you have a lot of mods installed?  Can you FTP into the site?  Can you Attach the files in question so we can have a look at them?

Overwrite all your forum files with a fresh set from the large upgrade package (your smf version), minus the upgrade.php and the 2 upgrade.sql files. In this way your forum files will be cleaned up totally and all your posts/topics/members will stay intact as that info is preserved at the database which will not be touched by the above action. Hope it helps

Take note to the part about minus the update.php and upgrade.sql files.!!!

Simple search of the site can find many answers!!!
