What version do you want to upgrade from?

First of all create a new database at the cp of your host. Then install the same version of smf that you have in a new folder, say ''test'' without the quotes. Install it at this new database that you created, then make a backup of your live database and import it to the new database that you installed the test forum. Then run the repair_settings.php file to straighten out all the paths, urls and all the other settings.  In this way you just created a duplicate of your live forum. And you can start play around with it and try out whatever new things you want to :)

How to backup and restore your database, check out the last link in my signature

You can copy your whole current forum to a new 'test' folder.  Create a duplicate db, then connect that copy to that second db.  Then perform an upgrade on a perfect copy of your 'original' forum.  Same process as moving to a new host, just locally.

How do I move my SMF board to a different host?
How do I save my SMF board?
How do I save the database data?
How do I restore the database data?

Then run repair_settings.php and reset all Theme paths.
