Displaying Things on My Home Page

I've been searching these forums for the past 30 minutes and I haven't been able to find the answers, so sorry if this has already been answered!

I would like to display 2 things on my home page (not forum home page):

1. Last 10 posts on my forum.
2. Forum Poll results.

I've heard that I'll need an RSS feed for the last 10 posts, but I'm clueless as to where I would get the feed and how to install it.  If anyone can offer suggestions that would be great and please use simple terms/instructions as I'm not very familiar with these things.

Thank you!  I have been to those links before, tried them and have no luck.  I think I'm doing something incorrectly.  I'll keep trying.

Umm...I know that this is a little more than a month after the last post, but I can't get the require function to work.  Doesn't the file that you want to include have to be in the same folder?  I think that's the problem.  If not, then I dont know.  I'm getting these errors:
