Display news to specific groups

How about making it so that when you fill in a news item, you can set some permissions so that members of different groups get to see (or not) different news items - that way the news items could be more relevant for those in different member groups.

For each news item you could have a list of available groups, just as you do for each Forum.

While this is an option, I think this is more the job of something like a protal or CMS...

Interesting, I could see the use even in a forum.  Like here.  We could add a news item for the next developers meeting and it should only be shown to those in groups that can see the thread about it and thus should attend.

hi Dave - that is exactly the type of use I had in mind, or perhaps being able to tailor that nice space at the top of the page for just those areas that are really relevant for each user.

does sound like a portal/cms thing but I can see it being helpful... my cms should be able to do this ^_^
tho I dunno if I'll ever publicly release the cms... mainly coz it probably wont be up to chop... if it is tho expect it announced here first (and yes, it will link perfectly with SMF)
