I'm curious.  How long will it be before 2.0 and 2.1 will be out of public beta?  And if it's in public beta, how safe is that as opposed to regular beta?

Thanks,
Caat

Have you read this? That post and the ones following it contain a brief summary of the current state of things.

My take on it, judging by what I've read and by what I've seen on my own test site, is that Beta 4 is safe but not perfect. Mind you 1.1.6 isn't perfect either. I'm not sure any software is. As soon as they release RC1 I'm changing over to it. The only reason I'm waiting is to avoid having to run an extra upgrade in the near future. If it wasn't for that I'd be happy to use Beta 4 as it stands.

This is my opinion only. Other people may not agree with it and I'm not going to argue the point.

I'm not using 2.0 for anything until it's in RC stages. I've been following the beta on my test server and while everything seems to work to me, that is a whole different story to letting my users at it. I have no doubt that if I had (stupidly, IMHO) put this on a live site it would be a disaster. The theme is also really disapponting me right now. I've never had to use tables and they are the bane of my life in SMF's theming system, if it wasn't such great software I would be using something else that is more easily maintainable, in terms of theming. I had heard they were changing over to semantic coding but as far as I can see, there are still tables in many, many areas. It's asking those who learn clean code to throw all their knowledge out of the window and step back in time. THE most frustrating thing about SMF - otherwise, I love it.

So, 2.0 uses tables and earlier versions do not?  I'm on 1.1.6 and one of the things I love about SMF is that I can just change the CSS in whatever theme I want to customize my theme.  I guess I can see, however, that there must be tables in there as that's what it seems to select when I look at it in Firefox developer.  Since I don't code, hard for me to say.

It's just nice to have some control over things after having been on phpBB and always having to have found someone to do the littlest things for me.

What is an RC release, how long do you think that will take and will it then be something I might think I can move to, not being a nuts and bolts person?

Thanks, both of you, for the input.

All versions of SMF use some tables and frankly it doesn't bother me. In fact for dealing with IE6 tables were necessary on some places. You couldn't get it to handle divs everywhere. Tables are useful for some purposes because, let's face it, forums usually present information in a tabular format. You get that. It works.

RC 1 will be out soon. Soon means soon. If you want a stricter definition you'll have to wait until it's out. Then you'll know exactly what soon means. When it's out I'll move to it. DMG may not. If you're not sure just chill and hang with 1.1.6 and see what the feedback is like on the RC1 version of SMF 2. IF people are freaking and running for the hills don't change over.

As for "what is an RC release?", read this. http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=271298.msg1774854#msg1774854
