Activation e-mail... bug or 'feature'?

I've noticed that when I approve a new member from Manage Members>Awaiting Approval I can select "Approve and send e-mail" from the drop down list and all works fine.

A few times when new members have registered I have been looking at their profile and clicked on the 'Approve' link on that form assuming, perhaps wrongly, that as my settings require activation of all new members, this would kick SMF into firing the e-mail off confirming approval. Except it appears it doesn't.

Is this correct? Obviously I now know I have to approve members using the former method otherwise they have no idea they have been accepted but if this is the case, what's the purpose of the Approve link on their profile?

Thanks

That is correct. From what I understand, if you do it there, you are approving them directly without any email confirmation being sent back.

I'm not sure why it's designed that way and I agree that it would make more sense to have an email confirmation sent out notifying the user of this.
