One of my members just got a new Powerbook, and suddenly can't open the forum. He gets this error:

LainaaSafari can't open the page http://knower.org/actforum/.

The error was: bad server response (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011)

Interestingly, I gave him the SMF homepage URL (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php) just to see if he could open it, and he got the same message.

I don't think it's necessarily a Safari issue, because I use Safari and have no problems.

Anyone know what in tarnation is going on here?  ???

A few things:

1. Please upgrade.  1.0 RC1 is two releases behind, and stability is the main improvement in the recent releases.

2. Does the default theme work for him or her?  Or all themes don't work?

3. Does it work with other browsers, such as Camino, Firefox, or Omniweb?

4. Does it workl if you disabled "compressed output", at least temporarily?

5. What version of Sarari is it?

I'll be the first to admit I'm no expert with Macintoshes.  But, some Googling made it sound like this may have been a bug in Safari, at some point in time.

thanks for your reply, unknown.

1) i have been planning to upgrade. the problem is, i did a lot of customization to RC1, and i am at best a novice in php.... to make all of the same changes to the current release will take some time which, alas, i don't have right now.

2) the default theme is not available on my forum, although i'll change it so that it is and ask him if that works. however, i note that he could not view the default theme on the smf website, so i'm guessing that won't fix it.

3) not sure about the other browsers....i will ask

4) i turned off compressed output. will see what that does.

5) it's the current release of safari: 1.2.4 (v125.12). which happens to be the same one i'm running with no problem.

note that this same member has been able to access the forum on his older mac a week ago....

thanks again, and i'll let you know if any of this fixes it!  :D

Are you sure it was the default theme, or the site's theme?

I have users on my forum that use Safari (not sure on versions right off) and seem to have no problems. Most users are using the Apollo theme on my forum though I have 4 or 5 others including the default, not sure which the Safari users are using. I'll see if I can find out for you about any issues.

As Unknown mentioned, try the gzip compression off to see what it does.

From a quick google search, it appears to be a widespread problem with people thinking anything from PHP version problems to ZOPE (an optimizer) to gzip compression to who knows what being the  cause. I've seen a couple pages saying it was a known problem with Safari that woudl be fixed in a future version as well. In general, most threads seem to blame gzip support in Safari for it.

zknower

I turned off gzip and am waiting for my member to report back.

In general, the consensus I saw traipsing around google this morning was that...

LainaaBasically Safari throws that up when you send gzipped pages without a Content-Length field

Does SMF send a content-length field in the current release? And if not, might this be a future modification?

[Unknown]

It may not send a Content-Length, but MANY/MOST scripts do the same... Content-Length is no longer required in HTTP 1.1.
