Any way to post events in calendar without posting a message?

I'd love to use the calendar just to create events but without posting notices in forums.

Can this be done?

The other thing that doesn't make sense to me is that I pick a date for the event to appear in the calendar, but it shows up in the forum the day I post the event, not the day the event occurs? Why wouldn't the post appear the day the event occurs?
