Bug Fixes/Updates/Changes to This Mod

1.) None As of Yet

Introduction

The 2 Versions below do not have any differences between eachother other than one uses sessions to play the sound once each session and the other plays the sound constantly after you refresh your page.

For Audible PM 1.0:
This mod will play an audible sound whenever you receive a Personal Message (PM). Every time you refresh the page it will play the audible sound. The sound that comes with the mod is the official AOL ("You Got Mail") sound.

For Audible PM 1.5:
This mod will play an audible sound whenever you receive a Personal Message (PM). It uses sessions so that the official AOL ("You Got Mail") sound isn't constantly playing each time you refresh the page. So each time you log out and log back in, it will play the sound once. That is the session.

Glad to see youve taken over this brian.
I have this installed in every site I have floating round!
I use the version similar to your Audible PM 1.0, so they have no choice but to read it! lol

Are you not going to use the other sounds packages aswell?   eg. Austin Powers etc

Great job anyways bud :)

Yeah, I will include some more sounds. Maybe I will include an admin panel option in the future versions. ;)

Love this mod...lol. And I have it working on Beta 4.  ;D

Cool. Here are my plans:
  • Make a set of admin settings in the Features and Options that will include the following settings: Enable/Disable, Play Sound Continuously (every time page is refreshed (check or uncheck)), and a text box for the admin to input the file name that will be played. This will allow Audible PM to be reduced into 1 version instead of a 1.0 and a 1.5.
  • Make mod compatible with SMF 2.0
  • Add option for users to disable the sound for themselves.

    Also why does it say:

I make so many edits, I figured it only fair to give warning.  :P

Also, will the sound files have to be in .swf format?

brianjw

No the files will NOT have to be in .swf format in the next version.

The box in the admin will allow you to enter the file name. It will call a file from /path_to_smf/
If you enter gotmail.swf, that is what you get and that should be present in the SMF root. If you put gotmail.wav that should also be present in the SMF root.

Depending on what you put, it allows all file types, just use them wisely and remember that some file types are not supported by all users. Even swf is not the best supporting of all users. Most people have it but not all. .wav might actually be a better file format if you have one. ;)

OK now a question from the php challenged  :o

I successfully implemented the MOD & made the changes in my index.template.php but I do not understand how to put the gotmail.swf in my root directory nor do I see that file anywhere.  All I see if I unzip the package is a gotmail.shockwaveflash file.  Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for being so stoopid but, well, I just am...

Sabre™

The root of your forum is where your packages folder, themes folder, sources folder, smileys folder etc are.

The gotmail.shockwaveflash file is the gotmail.swf, as I've labled in red.

Ask any questions you have when ever you have them.
Its the best way to learn :)

thanks.  OK I drug & dropped that got mail file to the folder at the top of my tree.

It's not working though  :(  I just tried a few test messages.  I got a popup telling me I had a new PM but no sound...

Sabre™

Which version of the mod are you using?
Can you disable your PM popup in your:
Profile >> Personal Message Options  and untick  Show a popup when you receive new messages, and send a new PM.

I dont have the popup on, so Im not sure if that would effect the mods workings if youre using the one that announces the PM only once.

dumblonde

I disabled popups & tried another test but still no sound.  I am trying to use the 1.5 version of the mod.  I am sure I have just done some silly thing that is messing it up.

...& before anybody asks the sound is turned up on my computer.. even I am not that dumb  :P

LOL

Ive got a couple minutes before I need to go, can you attach your index.template.php to your next post please?

Edit
Gotta go.

Good luck

dumblonde

thanks sabre.

I have a knowledgeable friend trying to help me.  I changed the default template instead of my theme template (sorry but when a MOD says change "default" template to me that means default not theme).  We are trying to change my theme template to see if that work.  I told you it doesn't take much to confuse me...

Will let ya know  :D

dumblonde

thanks for the help.  It is fixed.  I was editing the wrong theme.  I warned you of my php inferiority superiority up front at least  :o

dumblonde

I lied I have a few more questions  :D

OK the MOD I installed (version 1.5) worked one time.  I am unclear on the differences between 1.0 & 1.5.  I installed 1.5 thinking it would say "you've got mail" one time for every new PM a user received.  I thought 1.0 would annoyingly say it over & over for the same single PM every time you refresh the board which I took as every time you went from one thread to another or every time you closed the board & came back (which is different than logging out & back on to me) until you checked the new PM.

I had a friend send me several test PM's & after the initial "you've got mail" was said to me (which occurred as I logged into the board) I have gotten no more verbal inclinations.

So does 1.5 only work once for every time you physically log onto the board (as in logout then logon)? because most people never logout of my board.  I don't want some annoying you've got mail! you've got mail! over & over again but I want it to say "you've got mail" once for every new PM people get as in if I am sitting there browsing through threads & I get a new PM I want a verbal notification.

Have I installed the wrong MOD version?

thanks again...

Sabre™

I do not use the version you have where it says it only once, in fact I use the original mod Bigguy first released.
I would assume your version would tell you of each new PM you received.
When the PM is sent, do you read it before the next one is sent to you?

Brian would be better to assist you with that version.
His next release should be out fairly soon, and will have options adjustable in the admin section.

God luck

Ok, yes 1.5 does use sessions and that means each session it will play the message and there is only one session used per login. When you log off and log back in, you have a new session and it will play it again once more.

1.0 plays it continuously, but it isn't that annoying. The point is the get the user to check their PM and keep reminding them.

There probably is a way to allow the audio file to only play once every 2 pages or something, if that's what you want.

Thank you Sabre for also helping dumblonde with her other questions.

dumblonde

Well it looks like what I want is a marriage of the 2 (maybe version 1.25 lol) where it would sound the alert once & only once for each new message you get regardless of if you have an unread PM in your box.  Thanks for all the help... I think I will uninstall & see what the new version has to offer when it comes out  :D
