I have my forum setup to use gzip compression for output, just recently I decided to use rss, after tring to validate it,I got this:
operable program or batch file.
X-Powered-By: PHP/5.0.3
Set-Cookie: PHPSESSID=ef47f5e138fc8dedcf2b9bea2d34d916; path=/
Expires: Thu, 19 Nov 1981 08:52:00 GMT
Pragma: no-cache
Cache-Control: private
Vary: Accept-Encoding
Content-Type: application/rss+xml
Content-Encoding: gzip
Vary: Accept-Encoding

[A BUNCH OF GZIP DATA]

As you can see the rss has been gzip'd.  Is this a feature or a bug?
I would imagen its a bug because no rss reader I've seen understands this.  So what can I do about it?

I'm worried about this:

"operable program or batch file."

Looks like an error message :P.

Content-Encoding: gzip

Well, the rss reader is telling SMF "I can read gzip, so if you want to gzip it... send it off to me, please!" so if it isn't, indeed, able to do so... then it's lying and that's a bug in it.  But, for the record, I've tried many readers on this forum installed here (the on you're looking at) and even though its compression is enabled they've all worked.

In other words, when the rss reader talks to simplemachines.org, it sends a request, like this:

GET /community/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml HTTP/1.0

But, if it supports gzip, it would have to send a longer one:

GET /community/index.php?type=rss;action=.xml HTTP/1.1
Host: www.simplemachines.org
Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate
Connection: close

Why it would do this, I couldn't guess.
