Hello, Drakness and welcome to SimpleMachines.
First off you have always to run the script /install.php, at the end of your url (example: htt°://yourforum.com/install.php ).
Did you first create a database & password? Can you check if the name is the same filled into the installation script? You should see pre-filled an "smf_", that has to be changed with the right db name.
Then, pay attention while you fill the fields required with the correct infos. Usually the script suggest "localhost", but the server hosting the database may have another name (example an IP number), even if usually it's "localhost".

A database is required before an SMF installation is completed, you should logon to your CPanel WHM, Plesk, (well whatever) Web Control Panel and create a database and a user for the database, give full read / write access to the db and enter those details into the SMF fields as required.
On some server setups, this can be done via phpMyAdmin (What is phpMyAdmin?)

You should also confirm that localhost should not be replaced with the MySQL server name, in some cases, PHP and MySQL do not reside on the same server.
