Testing SMF... problem with avatars

Hi. I've been a long time phpBB advocate but when I found out about SMF, I thought I would test it out.  And I love all of the features and the template system and just about everything except I'm having trouble with avatars.
I've tested using attachments out and it seems to work fine but no avatars show up in the Edit Profile page. I have some avatars it the avatar directory and chmoded everything to 777 but to no avail. No matter what, the avatars don't seem to show up in the select box. Any help with this would be appreciated.
If I can get this to work, then I'll probably switch to SMF for good.

One more little issue that I'm not quite happy with is the copywrite and Lewis Media link at the bottom of the page. Please don't take me wrong, I have no problem giving credit where credit is due and I have no problem whatsoever with the "Powered by SMF" link. But I own a business (which will remain unnamed) that also offers content management systems, e-commerce systems, W3C compliant and accessable web & graphic design and SEO. So in short, I'm a competitor with Lewis Media and  therefore, I am not particularly comfortable with giving them a link on my (non-business) forum.  My company has not yet developed forum software because we don't have much of a demand for forum sites. Anyways, I would like to know if it is permissable to take out the Lewis Media copyright  if I make my own theme for the forum?

To enable the avatars, go to Admin, click on "Edit Features and Options" and expand the "Avatars" section. That will give you all your options. As far as the Lewis Media link - talk Jeff Lewis, Joseph Fung or David about that. Normally you can't modify the copyright tag, but ultimately it's up to them.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I already have the avatar setting so they should work.
I just double-checked and I do indeed have "Allow members to select a server-stored avatar" checked. My "Avatars Directory" and "Avatars URL" is correct.
Any more ideas?

Does anyone have any ideas on why this won't work and how it can be fixed? Is it a hosting problem? I really like this software but if I can't get the avatars to work, then I'll have to use phpBB or something.  :(

Double check your own profile, Look and Layout Preferences.

Make sure you do not have a checkmark in the box for Don't Show other users' avatars

Sorry, pet peeve, but it's "copyright": the right to copy.  Anyway, we've actually had this before and I believe we came to something with the other party so they were happy.  That said, we'd prefer you didn't change the copyright statement at all (as described by the license agreement we understand you must have read), and changing it is usually at a cost (meaning, removing even the link to Lewis Media may come at a price.)  Jeff Lewis is really the person to ask for details.  The forum *will* bark at you if you casually (read: accidentally) take it out.

As to the avatar issue, it could be a few things.  If attachments work fine, then that removes many possibilities.  First, note that uploaded avatars are, unlike most people expect, stored in the attachments directory.  They are saved in the same manner most attachments are, but at times this process may require the GD library (depending on your settings.)

Would you please post a link to a phpinfo.php file?  What is phpinfo.php?

You may also wish to check permissions, but uploading avatars is not currently one.  A test account where I can experience the issue myself would be of great use, as well.

Thanks,
