How to customize the forum banner ?

I am a novice at this. I have just set up an SMF 2.0b4 forum with the SMF default core theme. Now I see at the top of the page my forum name on the left and the phrase "simple machines forum" on the right, along with the SMF logo.

How do I go about putting in my banner? I see an option where I can put in the URL of my logo. Can this be a whole banner that replaces the existing banner? Will it also replace the currently displayed name of my forum (which means my banner should include the name). Or, is there another way to customize my forum's bannerhead?

If you put in a logo image URL, it will replace the text on the top left. The SMF logo on the right will stay unless you remove it in the template itself.

To manually edit the code, look in themes/default/index.template.php.

So, there is no limitation on the dimensions of the logo? Will the header area expand in height and width to accommodate my logo (so I can place a wide banner) ?

I don't believe there is in theory, the cell will expand to fit the image. However, keep in mind that not all users have large screens, so a good limit might be 600 pixels wide if you leave the SMF logo on the right, and 900 pixels if you remove it and join the cells. Once you go bigger, anyone using 1024 width will have to scroll to see the right side of the forum.

Yes, I don't have anything wider in mind. I was really worried about the height -- whether 300 px will fit. I think it should be okay.
