Running 1.1.7 and 2.0 on the same server?

Somebody must have asked this, but I can't find it if they did.

I have 1.1.7 running in the docroot of my own self hosted server now and have put a lot of work into tweaking it  and am hence not willing to do a straight upgrade at this point not knowing what effect that may have.

Forgive me if these sound like ignorant questions, but they are. If I install 2.0 into a sub in the docroot I assume it will not share the existing database with 1.1.7 which leads me then to ask if I should create the new database first because I don't know if 2.0 will try to use the same one by default, create a new one or ask me what to do. I figured I should find this out before going ahead.
Thanks

It will only use whichever database you tell it to use when you run the installation script. I prefer to use separate databases but some people happily run multiple installations with different table prefixes on the one database.

If you want to use a separate one then yes, create it before installing SMF.

Wow, quick on the draw there boss. That little voice is whispering to me that separate databases will perform better though that little voice might not know what it's talking about.

In any case I appreciate the response.

Just out of curiosity would different table prefixes in the same db mean you would have to manually setup the tables or does SMF, mysql or both fo it dynamically? I'm going to go with separate databases, but like I say I'm curious.
Thanks again

The script does it for you. You only have to choose what you want to use for the prefixes.

As an example, if the 1.1.7 forum has the usual smf_ prefix then when you installed SMF 2 on the same database you could insert smf2_ into the appropriate box in the installer screen.

That's pretty spiffy. Am I correct about the performance thing or is it maybe the other way around?

That was quite painless.

Created another database and breezed through the dialog.

Ok, if I could trouble you with one more question. How likely is it that the edits I've made would carry over to a 2.0 upgrade? I'm betting it depends on which ones, but not all of them will.

Antechinus

Which edits? The ones to 1.1.7? No chance at all. Your data will stay but all your files get overwritten with new ones.

That's what I figured, thanks
