Cannot install any package

Currently i am having a terrible issue and cannot install any package at all. i have tried to install many mods and get many errors at times.

here are some..

Some of the files the package manager needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and using it to chmod or create the files and folders. Your FTP information may be temporarily cached for proper operation of the package manager


and when i put in my correct ftp information for example on one mod i get  sytax errors and sometimes nothing at all but a 10second fatal error message any information will be grateful on how to get this to work.

Forum version: SMF 1.1.8
Current SMF version: SMF 1.1.8

Admin > Packages > Options > All files are writable

I have version 1.1.8 and when i viewed my php fle that you suggested it was already complete with the version that was on that page link you sent i had to change nothing.

also i went to my site admin/ packages/ options and keep trying to set all files to writeable but it will not hold.

So what mods do you have trouble installing, or is it just all mods?

well i tried to install the ajaxchat and shoutbox and those failed misserably and then it tried alot of mods that show up on the packages in the admin panel of course some of them are not compatable with 1.1.8 that show up but every dang mod i try will not work.  i have read to uninstall and delete database and install smf and upgrade all the way up but to me that is alot of work when it should work fine as is alot of people have mods just cannot figure out why i cannot.
