Replacing buttons?

I am trying to replace my profile_sm.gif button along with a few other and cannot figure out how to do it.  I have read the FAQ, I have read the tutorials, the one link I thought would explain was a dead link.  I have searched pages of posts posing the question different ways.  Nothing.

I have tried just uploading the new image to my server and replacing it with the old image, it doesn't work.  I have tried changing permissions.

Almost sure you uploaded the new image into the wrong location. Look at the browser url of the old image - this should give you a clue about the directory on the server.

Look, I'm sorry this is frustrating you.  I really have taken the time to try to learn things before I ask, this didn't have a tutorial. And to search for previous answers to the same question.  People have to learn somewhere.

The images are all found in Themes/default/images  some of them under the same directory then under English.
In trying to change the image for the ip button, I find it  located on my server at

First off, shes assisting you.

Secondly, when requestion support normally its common sense to some to post a link to their problem.

Are you trying to place buttons that you've made yourself into the theme?

You say you searched, but it seems you've missed something.  Check that topic and see if it answers your questions.

Also, I find it very ironic to find this listed as one of your site rules, yet you think it doesn't apply here.

I am not understanding here.  I apologized because she seemed frustrated and I didn't mean to do that.       In black and white it's hard to channel a persons tone and inflection and you have misunderstood mine.  The apology and the explanation that I am trying to learn was genuine.

I did see the link to the solution posted in searching but didn't think it applied because the poster was trying to add buttons and just on his top bar  instead of replace most of the set.  My mistake.

pepsifreak, I also apologize.  Starting any sentence with "Look, " just seems a bit hostile.  Much like my own downfall of agreeing by simply saying "fine".  People misinterpret the meaning.

I ended up uploading  a new folder with the combination of what I was trying to change and what I wanted to keep and then renamed it themes/default/images.  More work than what I was trying before.   It seemed like such a simple thing to change.  I am working on the English folder now.
