I'm seeing this XML/RSS feature in the News settings, but how do i actually use that function?

I would like to have a floating window on my website that shows every single new post in the forum updated live. Can RSS do this? Can i use several different RSS "channels" or whatever You say, on the same line? I'm using the zCommunity blog mod in the forum and want to use its RSS features too.

rss is actioned via index.php?action=.xml;type=rss.
Generally you'll see an RSS icon in your browser if your browser support its.

Thank You. But how do i customize it so that users don't get feeds from boards they aren't allowed to even see?

RSS won't show content from boards they aren't allowed to see.

Note, though I've seen several people say the same thing before here, that smf allowed to see boards they aren't allowed access to. However its always turned out that a mod they use to limit viewing topics (eg view only boards mod) didn't cover rss.

And how does an RSS feed with the exact same address for everyone know who's allowed to see what when nobody has to log in to the forum to update the RSS feed in their browsers?

robinrobin

Not getting rid of me until i get an answer :P

Technically there is no difference between visiting the forum with a web browser or reading a RSS-feed. The server generating the RSS-Feed will check the login-cookie and generates the feed accordingly. Or to put it that way: Everyone uses the same URL for your forum but still they see different boards.  It's the same with the RSS-Feed.

But why won't you just try it for yourself?

robinrobin

Hmm, cookies huh? What if they delete their cookies then? Will they be treated as guests?

Well, how can i try it myself when there's only one cookie in my jar here? lol ;)

DerEineDa

Yes, they will be treated as guests then.
