Well, intrying to upgrade to 1.1.8 a few things got screwed up, especially due to some faulty mods.  So, I tried to upgrade to 2.0RC1... screwed that one up too (I think the database was a bit flaky to start with).

So now, I did a fresh RC1 install.  My question is: Can I salvage my database from the downloaded .sql zip file of the database (the file downloaded via the forum maintanance menu in v1.1.8)

Is it restorable to RC1?  How can I do this?  I'd hate to lose all that work and posts, but I'm not a linux hacker either.

Yup, Download the large upgrade package from this site for 2.0 RC1, and unzip. Now open phpMyAdmin and access your database. Drop all the tables, and click import, or if on older version, SQL. Now press browse for the 1.1 backup file and run it. Now go into FTP and from the upgrade package you downloaded earlier, upload "upgrade_2-0_mysql.sql" and "upgrade.php" to the root of your forum. Now go to http://domain.com/forum/upgrade.php and run it. If you don't do this, your forum will crash as their are significant db changes in 2.0.

You don't need to be a 'linux hacker' to do what you want.

Running the Large Upgrade package as suggest for the RC1 should help.  But depending on the 'damage' you've caused to the db, you might have others issues with the upgrade script.

How have you gone with this?

All working great now.  One of your Aussie techies waded through the database and installed RC1 from scratch.  Great job too!

Thanks to all!
