variables--how?

Hi Everyone,
I have searched the forum but cannot find any relevant posts.

I want to create a new variable to use in my Theme's index.template.php.

As a newbie, I have no idea how to do that.

I will ponder how to implement it later, one thing at a time......

Any help would be appreciated.

Am using 20 RC1..

There's more to it than just creating a variable, that's pretty simple, something as basic as this will work: $alhuin = "variable\'s value";
What do you want the variable to do, where should it be defined?
