Ever since I upgraded to smf 2.0 beta, my host at downtownhost has been having problems with my server. It's taken it down 4 times now in the last month and I don't know why.

I got a message tonite from them saying to fix this asap or else. I don't know what the problem is or why this is happening.

They sent me a string of these:
7629 robhynes  25   0 98612  29m 6684 R 35.3  0.7   0:02.42 /usr/bin/php /home/-pathtoindex-/index.php

They are saying my chat site is chewing up 30% of their cpu.

Man, I don't have enough knowledge.
But try turning of the cache first, then see if the problem persists.
Otherwise there might be other problems.

rhynes

Cache was never turned on to be honest, just noticed that tonite.

himtuna

hmm.....
then you might try testing your site

Install firefox addons
firebug
yslow

And analyse your site against the parameters of yslow.

Before I do all that, i'm going to install the latest version of RC1 and attach to the old db with everything default... i'm suspecting one of my admins made a slip when messing with the code.

Will let you know.

Check your refresh rate on the chat board ... my shoutbox install is defaulted to updating every second -- way too often.

rhynes

After removing any/all mods, dropping tables on the database, I did a fresh install to a new db. Reattached the new install to the old db and so far so good. It's just the default blue, but I've got some members testing it now while i'm watching the server status. With the old forum install, I could watch the cpu's spike into the red zone on almost every post made.

Too weird.

I don't have a shoutbox on the forum weekend camper. Unless one is preinstalled and i don't know it.

The board is running RC1 now as well.

Ok, it's the template i'm using that's causing the problems... It's the Green template for 2.0. under default, things are fast and fine, but with the template, it's dragging alot.

I'm currently with downtownhost, they are excellent to deal with and I have no complaints.

...other than being somewhat ugly and bad use of Javascript, I couldnt find anything in this theme to overload your server...granted, I didnt look very deep,but...hmmmm weird...

maybe it was coincidence?

Wow.  Same exact issue.  I didn't see this thread when I posted mine.

We just installed the theme - http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=1370 - wondering if this could be the same issue?   I posted our server errors in the other thread.  Any help would be appreciated, we're crashing every couple hours at this point.. and the host says it's something with SMF causing it.

Same errors anyway...

I've installed fresh with RC1 and am using default template prettied up right now and it's fast.

Backup the template that you're using, and remove it. Run with the default to see if you're errors go away. this has me curious now.

Sure enough, running the default theme and all of the errors related to the forum aren't showing up in my error log anymore.   Wow. Thank you...  though, I don't considered this resolved.   We need to be running that theme, we customized it and have paid advertising in it.  I'd like to get things back to normal ASAP.   It sounds like it's definitely the background image within the theme.

Anyone find a resolution to this?

robg2251

We installed our theme, removed the background image, and all is well.  No errors.

So that's definitely it - background images = BAD!!    Hopefully this gets resolved.

rhynes

yep, my admin had a background image in the forum and had to remove it... that's the issue, you nailed it.

When all this started, there was also a background tile and having the same issues. Doh

rhynes

No, it was never resolved. Had to bite the bullet, lose a months worth of postings and drop down to 1.1.8.

All is fine under this version.
