Why need password/email when adding user to moderator group?

I'm trying to add a user to the 'global moderator' group but it will not let me unless i put in their email address and their password, which I don't know!

How can I give someone mod privileges without knowing this info???

Did you try adding them? Their email address should be already entered and their password will be left blank by default if you look at their profile page. You can just select global moderator and save the change. It may prompt you for your administrator password before allowing you to do this. Once that's done, that member will be set to global moderator status.
