Hi everyone,

I've just discovered SMF and think it is great software. OK. I've browsed through the permissions system of SMF and catched the way it is working I think. There is just one thing I'm wondering: what if I want guest to see a forum in the forums list on the index page but not to see the thread list of that forum nor read the threads/posts? Can I set this kind of permission? Am I missing something or this just can't be done?

Thanks,

MD

Nobody here can answer my question ???

You just want him/her to be able to read the forum name? Whats the point of that?

alslg.org

A "private" forum that users can get access to by becoming members of a group for exemple. In the forum description, the can read "be a member of xyz group to get access".

So just make a user based group and secure the forum to allow only the postgroup to view.. then just make the board an announcment board.

Dumb question: how do I make a forum an annoucement forum with smf?

alslg.org

That didn't worked. It just prevents the users from posting in the board. I want them to see the board name in the index page but not the thread list in the board index itself (when they click on the board name, they are redirected to the login page).

Someone can tell me if I can do that? Or a mod perhaps may exist?

Whats the point of them seing the board name and not being able to read anything or post in it?

I have already answer that question. Think of a "Private" forum that forum users could get access by being members of group. You specify in the forum description that they need to be member of a group to get access to that forum. Just like phpBB, myBB and other boards do.

I think you didn't get the point!

Why should a user see a board he can't access? It's nonsens! Therefor we've the permissions. Lock out the users who shouldn't access the board, so they won't see it, too. You can write in a topic that they've to register to see it.

Announcement?? Just click the "More options..." text during posting an answer or a new topic. Voilá! There you can make every thread an announcement! It had been taken away from the "Edit Board" section in the admin area.

alslg - it's relatively easy to display a board to guests and then ask them to login when they try to get to view the message index or a topic in that board. Displaying a board to a specific membergroup even if they can't access it is a bit more difficult, but it can also be done.
