Unread Posts Indicator Image, on Board Index

I am having a problem in my newly created forum. The unread post indicator(on.gif/off.gif) only change when the unread post is read by selecting it through the board name link...not from the "unread posts since last visit" or other links. You can read a post, go back to the forum index, refresh the page a hundred times, and it will still have the indicator on, like there are still unread posts. Again, if you access the message index page using the board name link, the indicator works correctly. What code in which .php file should I be looking for.

I have found that editing php using Microsoft Expression Web has caused glitches when using IE. Could this be another glitch caused by me using Expression to edit the php's?
