I'm currently running phpbb 2.0.13 and after testing SMF out for the past month I'd like to convert. But here's my dilemna. I have my phpbb forum in the root of my web. So it's accessed by going to www.mydomain.com and not something like www.mydomain.com/forum/.
I want my new SMF forum to take it's place. So how do I do this without getting all the files mixed up? If I copy SMF to the same folder it will just replace my index.php for my phpbb site. Can this be done somehow? I'd like to convert but I don't want to screw it up. I need to make this conversion seemless as possible. TIA!!

Go ahead and install to the /forum/ folder as you suggested.

When you have proven that it is working right, in your root add a new index.php file that reads

<?php
include('../forum/index.php');
?>

But I don't want to install it to my /forum folder. I want it in the root in place of the phpbb board.

I would try one of two methods:

Install SMF in /forum, convert data from phpBB to SMF, backup EVERYTHING I CAN FIND, and then delete phpBB.  Subsequently, I'd move SMF from /forum to /.

Or, I'd move phpBB to /phpbb, install SMF in /, convert, BACKUP EVERY LAST THING I CAN FIND, and then delete phpBB.

Personally, I'd probably do #1 because I have more experience with SMF than phpBB.
