changing template

hi,

though I have been looking around here, I can't find any instructions on how to change the template. It's not in the help section. I tried opening template.php, change what i like (adding a picture on top of the page) and upload, but no change takes effect. And is there a way to include icons with any board, so as to distunguish the boards not just by text, but also by icon.

You want Themes/default/index.template.php - template.php is leftover from YaBB SE and won't have any effect on SMF.
