Is this possible with SMF?

Hi, I am looking for a forum software which should nearly meet our requirements. I tried different software and now I installed simpleMachines 2 successfully.

I searched already a lot but did not find what I was looking for. I kindly ask for answers to my questions:

1. We need a closed forum for a very small community, without any guest access and no registration by the users itself. Therefore it is necessary to show a log in as the only information when the forum is entered.

2. All members are known to us in advance by name, email address etc. The admin must be able to create accounts and also initial passwords. At this time the admin has to assign members to a member group.

3. The admin must be able to set the permission to member groups that way, that all groups may see a general category and in addition to this only the categories, they are allowed to see.

I think that no. 3 is possible with SMF, but I did not find any information about 1 and 2. Thank you for your answer in advance.

Regards,
Maxi

All of those can be done with an unmodified smf installation.

1) There is a setting to not allow guests in at all.

2) There is also a setting to disable registration. That way you can register new accounts only through the admin panel. If you need to really create the initial passwords yourself, you can change the password of the newly created profile, through the profile. :)

3) You can set permissions in many very different ways in smf

Thanks for your quick answer.

2) There is also a setting to disable registration.

That means I would have to change the log in screen and delete to offer to register. Should be easy.

That way you can register new accounts only through the admin panel.

Now I looked through all functions again and I'm happy - I found the menu item. :)

If you need to really create the initial passwords yourself, you can change the password of the newly created profile, through the profile. :)

This is ok.

Thanks again, I can now continue to explore SMF in detail.

Regards,
Maxi

Glad if that helped, for more in depth info, just ask if something in particular is giving you trouble :)
