Guest cannot use polls?

We would like our guest to be able to post in our daily polls but that option does not seem to be available.
Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance!

Have you checked the option in Permissions for unregistered users?

How will you track the votes? Someone can vote 300 times in a row.

there are no permissions that apply to guest for polls.

There is no option in SMF for guests to vote since there is no reliable method of preventing them voting more than once.

Yeah, if someone disconnect and re-connect... Great idea.

I don't know if that's such a great decision ... actually, I thought guests could vote with the right permissions. Seems silly not to have that functionality just because it could be abused. I'd simply trust that people are doing the right thing. And who in their bloody right mind would disconnect and reconnect to the internet 300 times (or more) just to foul up a simple poll? By that logic, you can't let registered members vote either - since making a new account is a lot faster than disconnecting and reconnecting to the internet, for many people. (Especially since when you're on cable/dsl, you've a very low chance of getting a new IP - usually they re-assign you the same IP, if you reconnect too quickly, especially with cable where you can sometimes go for months with the same IP.)

You don't have to vote five times in a row, but on different days/weeks.

Louis (CSpotkill)

Accidental voting, I can understand - but even then, if you visit the site regularly, "on different days/weeks" as you put it, I would assume you would either have registered or would remember that you've already voted. Allowing guests to vote is usually so you can have much greater feedback from visitors who find your site via Google, etc. People who probably won't visit again.

If guests could vote, what's to keep a member from NOT logging in and voting many times since a member is restricted to one vote?

Ethics? Trust? Knowing that what they're doing is most likely pointless (as for any serious matter, guests probably wouldn't be allowed to vote or even see the topic).

I fail to see the justification for this - an admin should be able to allow guests to vote, it doesn't have to be default.

yep, would be great if guests are able to vote

I can see Poll Permissions on my home forum under "Unregistered Guests" ???

Yes, I thought I could too, but then, I've never tried it to see if it really does something. So I just went along with the rest of the thread. (Oops! lol.)

But they don't allow to vote.

Fizzy

I've got it working perfectly on mine.

Recheck all of the nested permissions.

You need to allow posting new topics and posting polls against unregistered guests. Also make sure that the board permissions are set to allow the unregistered guests to post new topics and polls.

I think not everybody wants to give those permissions to guests along with voting.

Cypher7

Yeah I don't want to allow guests to post, but I would like them to vote... I have a small enough site, and I don't think anyone would be bothered about screwing up a poll about which they think is better... Taekwondo or KickBoxing!?!

This has been argued many times... some people want it, some people don't. So IMO, I think it should be an option for admins to allow it... even if it's off by default. Wouldn't that suit everyone :P

Fizzy

I'm sorry guys,  I'm a bit confused about the part of allowing poll voting but not posting  ???
I guess I can't see the difference between the two.

If the issue of posting is that sensitive then I don't understand the relevance of allowing a person who has no ability to contribute to thread to be allowed to vote on that subject.

I get the impression that SMF was written in a tiered manner, requiring a guest to contribute as a poster as option #1 and a voter as option #2, but I may be wrong. I would interpret a vote as a form of posting. Am I making any sense on that score?

Probably not, knowing me  ;D

Not letting guests post encourages them to register - and follow rules / talk nicely. Which is different from wanting to let them vote. (One click shouldn't require you to register or login, or you won't click. Posting, though, is different & should take longer.)
