[TIP/TRICK] Membergroup Images Instead of Name

WARNING: This method can seriously damage your forum! Do not use this unless you know what you're doing!

For those that are wondering how to make a membergroup name an image instead of just boring old text, here you go.

Go to Admin -> Membergroups -> {Group} Modify -> Group Name

Then, do the following

Add that as the Membergroup name INSTEAD of entering text.
Remember to replace the URL provided with the actual URL of the image you are using.

See attached screenshots for a demo :)

* This tip works for board names as well.
** I Highly recommend that you host the image on your site as it will speed up the loading time of the image and prevent lag on your site.

Nice post and well said. :)
You can also use the same image code for several other spots in your forum, such as board names and descriptions.

Hmm found an error, on 2.0 RC5 if you make this edit it breaks the theme and outputs this:

<img src="http:///forums/Themes/default/images/ranks/banned.pn</a></td>
<td></td>
<td style=" text-align:="" center"="">0

Also shows no image..

Great tip. :)

We've been using images as board names for a long time now... they look nice, work great and we love it. 8)

I've done this on my forum and I love the idea.

I've done this for Admin, Global Moderators, Moderators and Mentors on my site.

The only issue is that when I go to change a member's primary member group, to make them a moderator, say, the drop down menu is blank (since there is not text and it won't show a picture) and you have to kind of guess where your moderator button might be.

The images do show beside the check buttons for the 'additional member group' area, though. Go figure.

Please do not PM or email, Thank respond please post fast to SMF!

kizarze

Using this tip to -create new membergroups- has broken my forum. Any ideas?

You have it like this, right?

Right?

Try this:

Thanks for the tip, Kcmartz but it doesn't seem to change the drop down menu at all and it remains blank.

When I say blank, I mean I can still choose something. I just doesn't tell me what I'm choosing.

kingkingston

well if you stuff it up, you can't re edit the link as i just found out, doesn't even show the edit group link.

bump, can someone help me fix the above problem please :)

WantSome

You'll probably get more joy in the support forums, Kinkingston - I'd recommend starting a topic there instead.

ProHax

I found a way to fix that problem,

 • Log in to your database that your host controls
 • Go to smf_membergroups
 • Click on "Edit" where you can see the <img src~~
 • Change it back to the name it was before
 • Press "Go"

FIXED! :)

Same problem here. Now I have to use fix mentioned above so I can use my forum normally again. I admit I was a fool cause I wasnt thinking before I did this, so the joke is on me.

Dear visitors if you ever stump on this "Trick" please save yourself a headache and close this tab. Dont use it or you will be laughing to yourself as we did.

PLEASE DON'T USE IT.

In case you didn't read the tips, this can seriously damage your forum requiring manual database changes to fix.

thearmykid

you are rite with that one i had to go to database and fix the bugged groups but im ok with that so it still ok with me :)

JBlaze

I totally I forgot I made this... 4 years ago.

Anyways, added a warning/disclaimer to the OP.

i just wanted to add a tip to anyone who uses this cool smf "hack", make sure your maximum avatar with is greater than or equal to the width of the images you use. ie my avatar maximum size is 148x148, so i would make my member group images 148x30. you get the idea.

Well it worked perfectly for me, I wonder why? That's pretty odd if it didn't work for anyone else

Arantor

That's why I said *CAN* as opposed to *WILL*. There are places it will guaranteed not work properly (e.g. go to someone's profile and try to change the primary group of a user), and under some circumstances it can prevent you actually changing group configuration on a more permanent basis.

I should add, while I don't expect to change the code in 2.1, 3.0 WILL BREAK THIS PERMANENTLY.

Would it work any better if there was a Mod for such a thing?

Arantor

Technically it's actually a security risk to have this but the size of the field limits the 'worst case scenario' (it's hard to weaponise it to an actual security risk, but we still get reports every so often that it is a persistent-type XSS hole that should be fixed, but it's because of the number of people who use this 'tip' that I can't just change it)

All groups need to have a regular textual name for all the places that a regular textual group name is needed (any dropdown, amongst others), and really what you're saying is that you just need a mod to change the way the thread and maybe profile displays the group's name.

Illori

actually it has been changed in 2.1 already, and html in the username field does not get parsed out any longer.

Instead of actually replacing the Name as said with the image link.

You can change the staradmin.gif to another icon and put the number of stars to 1. That'll do the trick too. And it won't screw up the name.
