I have a forum installed by myself on a GoDaddy server.  I have the latest version.  GoDaddy let me send only 50 emails a day from this account, so I need to use a different email address.  I have tried sendmail, and I have tried SMTP, and there has been problems with notifications for a long time.  However, lately the error message is showing up at the moment of posting, which is annoying everyone.

At the moment, I am trying SMTP and testing it out with different email addresses by attempting to send an email from the forum.  Here's the error message I am getting:

2: fsockopen(): unable to connect to geraldinemcgreevy.com:25
File: /home/content/g/m/c/myaccountname/html/forum/Sources/Subs-Post.php
Line: 556

I shall keep testing, but I wondered if I could put something out here in case someone can help me direct what I should check or change next.

I read this thread and so I tried using my gmail address as smtp, but there is no SSL support.

I noticed in the same thread that some hosting providers don't let you use a different smtp address.  I suppose that could be the case here.  In which case I am buggered and will need to change, since 50 a day is not enough for the notifications.

Well, geraldinemcgreevy.com on port 25 works fine for me so... it looks like GoDaddy is blocking that port for you.

Oh now that is really interesting.  I'll contact godaddy and ask them about it.   Thank you.

As a matter of interest, how do you test it if you don't have the password and can't therefore test it by actually sending email?  can you ping or something from php or from the forum?  I haven't understood yet what does what, in order to test things systematically.

Start -> Run -> type "cmd" -> type "telnet hostname 25" -> type "quit".
