DirtRider, just a suggestion here for what might be a temporary work around. I'm currently testing the new Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 and it seems to be very smooth. Although it comes with the usual beta warnings Mozilla also say that they consider it stable, and it will run at least some of the add-ons made for 3.0. You can install it parallel to 3.0 and 2.0 as well if you know how. I have all three running independently on C drive and there are no glitches so far. It might be worth trying it and seeing if it gets around this problem for you.

DirtRider

Done that one already  :'(   :D and I am just running it but CarlT100 did try it if I remember correctly

QuoteWhat happens if you disable Javascript for the forums? Do you still see the slowdown problems?

Are you
talking about disabling Javascript in the Firefox options or disabling the plugins?  I will certainly experiment with this.  For the next two days, I will not be on line very much; but over the weekend, I will play with it.

I also have YSlow (currently disabled) and have measured my download times with it and with a stopwatch.  Yslow adds one to two seconds to the download times, which is no big deal. I am on a 1.5 meg connection that actually averages around 1.3 Meg.  Ten seconds or less is no big deal to me and I can live with 15 seconds download times.  When it gets into the 20 to 30 second range, it gets quite frustrating.

I appreciate your interest in this and I am willing to try any suggestions that you can think of.

After disabling a Java plugin, I find Triumph Talk loading in the 3 - 9 second per page range - which is normal.  This is faster than it loads on IE6.  I won't be able to remain  logged in all day as I usually do.  That will have to wait until the weekend.  This page loaded in 8.0 seconds which is about normal.  The PM module still is slow and causes a slowdown.

I appreciate the tip on Java and I will see how that works out over the weekend.

Eventual we have found something to work on. So it seem that we have some kind of conflict with the Java and FF on RC1.

The only thing is without Java some elements of the forum just don't work.

I have also noticed a difference in speed without Java being enabled

To clarify, are you disabling Java or Javascript? They're both different. SMF doesn't use Java at all although it can often slow down browsers. Javascript is used for various things though

I started off disabling both but now only have Java disabled and it seems to still be faster than before. This is why I was worried about the Java Script as the forum does use this. However we still have the clash with the PM Popup as far as I understand. We need to check with CarlT100 and see how it is going his side

I had a chance today to login to both SMF and Triumph Talk on a different computer (running XP SP2) using Firefox 3.0.10 and a different ISP.   There were no addons installed on this machine.  The connection was slower than mine and as a result the loading was slower.  However, I experienced the same slowdown from the PM module and the same hanging toward the end of a page load as I do at home.

I have found that since I disable Java, the RC-1 forums are faster and do not seem to have the long term slow down I was experiencing previously.  I have been logged into Triumph Talk for several hours and the loading times have not increased.  I am still experieince a hang and then slow loading after I use the PM module and if I get the PM popup, the page I was loading when it popped up stops loading if I select open in another window and sometimes if I select cancel.

It appears to me that there is a conflict with Javascripts between RC1 and Firefox 3.0XX. I reiterate that I am not a programmer.

I see we are now having the same issue on 1.1.9 with the popup freezing the loading page when using FF  :P

Have you tried disabling hostname lookups in SMF?

Please do not PM me with support requests unless I invite you to.

Do you still require support with this?

DirtRider

I think for now we can mark it as solved thanks

I know this is marked as solved, I skimmed the whole topic, but forgive me if I have repeated anything :)

Have you checked your error log..? You can also get an insane amount of queries when SMF's error log goes into action to save them to the database, and if you have hundreds (or thousands :P) of pages in your error log, that is probably your problem.

Also, did you reinstall all your modifications after you upgraded, or what?

DirtRider

Yes did a clean install of all the mods when I upgraded I just did it to the default SMF forum and then built it up from that. I have even tried turning off the error logs but with this said the members are complaining about all SMF RC1 forum being slow and having the same issues  ;D

Why do you try to turn the error log off?

DirtRider

To see if this was maybe causing a slowdown but it was not. It does seem that turning Java off in FF help quite a bit

Java or JavaScript? Because those are two totally different things.

If you have no errors in your error log when it is on, that isn't the cause.

Also, is this one of the sites having slow issues? http://www.gameporthole.com/

Antechinus

Just an aside here: I'm not running RC1-1 on my live site but I do have it on test sites and it does seem painfully slow at times when using FF, even on a local host. I haven't done any real testing of alternative settings yet as I don't spend a lot of time on the test sites.
