This was a mod for phpBB what it basically does is allow you ( via admincp ) to add acronyms to a little list with a short explanation of what it meant

i.e brb - be right back
SMF - Simple Machines Forums - http://www.simplemachines.org

and when a user posted it would then create a hover over that displayed the explanation so SMF would display as SMF and on mouse over would show
QuoteSimple Machines Forums - http://www.simplemachines.org

.. i hope at least some of that makes sense :/

p.s
love the spell checker :P

Well, I'm not sure but afaik this isn't hard to do, e.g. with the word censor :P.

I think the censor is a cool way to have certain words sponsored as well.

Like having the word Motorcycle link to hondas website automatically :)

Im sure on the right forum people would pay good money to own certain words posted by users ;)

You can see it if you quote me:

Only problem is when they use an acroynm in a post title.  It doesn't work too well with the censor ;)

[Unknown]

Why not?  You can instruct the censor to replace a word with HTML.

-[Unknown]

Thantos

Well that would explain it then :)  I was replacing with BBC.

Of course the biggest problem would be if you allowed users to turn off censoring and they did they wouldn't see the nifty acronyms.

The word censor has some other great applications. I use it to automatically correct the many misspellings of the word 'design'. But then, I probably need to get out more. ::)

You must have it in the list of disabled bbc, then?

-[Unknown]

And how do I go about doing that? I've tried both [acronym bbc tags and <acronym html tags, and everytime I get an error somewhere, either on the topic title, the recent posts list on the index or the quick reply box on the bottom of every topic.

Edit: is there a way to use it only on the message body?

Hi,

Following Unknown suggestion, I am using word censor to make the acronyms work on member's posts.

The problem is the full code is seen when acronym is used in the topic titles.

Anyway to make it work in topic titles also? or anyway to make it work ONLY in posts?

Thanks.
:)

JayBachatero

Please search for this.  It has been asked a couple of times.

Hi Jay,

Thanks for your reply. I did search "acronym topic" and can't find the answer except this thread. So I thought I'll post the question here. Could you help pls?

Thanks.

JayBachatero

Ok I got confused about your question before I was half awake at that time.

You can not use bbc tags in the topic fields.
Take a look at the title for this specific post.

What I was thinking was about using them keywords that trigger an advertisement link.

 :)

I have preset in Word Censor to replace acronyms, for example when members type HS, and it will be replace by [b][color=green][acronym=Heavenly stem]HS[/acronym][/color][/b].

The propblem is when member type HS in the title, it looks like this
http://www.fivearts.net/index.php/board,15.0.html

I was hoping someone can suggest some changes to files to make the Acronym Tag, or even bbc code, to work in topic title.

Is there other way to use acronym without going through Word Censor? That will be the solution.

???

Sheepy

If bbc works in title, then the gateway to hell would be opened... imagine flying topics in 48 fonts, or even title in flash.  Your users can make a christmas tree on board index with it.

But yes this (autolink/acron) is a popular request.  Well, php is not that hard to learn, is it?

Okay, I've tried the below in the right side of the censor, but it didn't work.  What am I doing wrong?
<acronym title="replacement">words</acronym>

Thanks

JayBachatero

Try using BBC tags instead.

On the left side of the arrow, I enter replaceme.  On the right hand side of the arrow, I enter [acronym=thisword]replaceme[/acronym]

When I create a new topic, and type replaceme the topic displays[acronym=thisword]replaceme[/acronym]

Any more ideas?

JayBachatero

Is this on the body or subject field?

JayBachatero

It should work in the body field.  Check to see that you enabled the use of this tag.  Admin > Posts and TOpics > BBC Settings.

It's enabled, and if I type the acronym tag in the body, then what I just typed shows up properly.  I just can't get it to work through the censor.

shazoo!

ahhh this is fantastic.  I was hoping I could do something like this :)

Thanks for this thread!!
