Someone needs to take over this mod otherwise Karl's work is in vain... I'm surprised Karl didn't try and find someone but clearly whatever happened in his life came out of the blue and took him away without allowing him preparation.

Agreed.  The stable version is stable.  The beta version is beta.  If you're so interested in having support for it, why not pick it up and develop and support it?  Go for it dude.

When I try to apply this mod, I get the message,

"Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again."

Logging out and back in again doesn't solve the problem.

The latest version of this mod is quite a significant step forward from the previous. It has been rewritten and has had some major improvements, using what you call the "stable version" isn't an option for people like me who regularly use the BBC News embeds and benefit greatly from the look-up functionality.

Karl had been asking for people to take over his mods for months, so he didnt just abandon them.

He explicitly said he did not want anyone to take over this mod because he wanted to update it himself, unfortunately that is no longer possible. That is what I was trying to get at, I never commented on his other mods.

If you read my post again, you'll hopefully realise that it is actually in support of Karl and his work. I expressed that I didn't want his work to be in vain and showed an understanding that the only reason he hasn't found a developer must be due to the timing and seriousness of the reasons behind him leaving.

So as someone who has a deep respect for Karl, I ask that you retract your false accusation and slander of my name.

If BBC links work in the beta version, the code for that particular site should be easy to implement to the stable version if that doesn't support BBC links. It's just a few lines of codes.

The BBC news thing uses the new look-up functionality so not sure it would be so easy.

Wow shocking, I assume someone will take over this mod then? This is the type of mod that needs a very active developer.

I'm not sure anyone will take over... It's quite a large mod, and even for people who have enough time to waste it on developing large mods for free (e.g. SMF Media Gallery in my case), it's not easy to simply "take over", as opposed to helping the original author with some portions of it.
I've been asked a couple of times to take over AEVAC, I've even considered it several times, and fact is, it seems I'm the only one who actually considers that, at all. But there are far more drawbacks to me, than advantages. (Advantage: I love writing regexps. Drawbacks: tech support. Possibly too many nasty bugs to fix. Having to add and remove video sites constantly. Living with the weight of having to maintain two of the biggest media mods for SMF. Etc...)

I still don't like the idea of seeing the mod drift away into oblivion because it's the best of its kind, but I know that I'm personally using AEVAC 3 which does a satisfying job for me, and I have absolutely no idea what AEVAC 4 is supposed to bring, except for a whole lot of shiny new bugs.
Maybe I would be less frightened to take over AEVAC 3, actually, I don't know. Are there any "real" advantages to AEVAC 4?
I could work on fixing bugs in AEVAC 4 if they're not too complicated, but I can't promise I'll take over immediately and forever. I think I can spare a few days of work on this, because right now SMG is close to the final 1.5 release and we're not seeing too many bugs so I could work on both projects next week, but after that, I'm not sure of what I'll be able to provide.

I have read in other threads, or maybe it was Karls farewell thread, that you were thinking on the idea, and have been waiting for you to come here to comment.
I agree with all you have stated, and Im glad that you are considering ironing out a few bugs.
Many people would appreciate your time, and understand the enormity of anyone considering taking the reigns on this project.

I would love to help, but regexps aren't anything I know about although I know my way around php. And  yeah I also don't care about adding new sites, but just about getting this mod to work properly.

Yes, several cool features including "Check whether Youtube videos are embeddable",  Use higher quality YouTube clips
(where available),  Fix uses of the embed html with an embeddable link,  and last and least important "Include the Original Link
(for sites that don't have it in the player)."

If you are going to take over the mod, it would be better to do version 4!
