Nao, I agree it would be pretty bad to have to support all those video sites. I think this mod supports far too many video sites, I think it should support just the major ones and leave it at that.

Unless I'm mistaken (or facing a strange bug), I think AEVAC 3 doesn't feature any settings page, unlike AEVAC 4 and its aevac tag in "features and options".

As far as I'm concerned, it's the only thing that I miss from AEVAC 4. If this could be added to v3, I'd be perfectly happy, and would indeed consider that AEVAC 4 doesn't bring anything really important.

But of course, I'm not using all these exotic video sites (it's good to know they're here, but in practice, I'm just using the standard youtube/dailymotion sites), nor those lookup functions. So I speak as a very very basic user.

The thing is, YT videos in version 4 just produce the white circle of death, as mentioned earlier, which basically renders it useless for YT.

Well I'm not sure how this is done...? Anyway, when a video is not embeddable, I don't really mind, since just clicking on the flash movie will usually bring me to the item page... (I'm not exactly sure, though.)
Also, I regularly have a "Not embeddable" error which gets fixed when I simply refresh my page. (This is with AEVAC3.)

Well that one is cool for n00bs, but I suspect this is one of the reasons v4 has grown to such large proportions... Actually, I already thought that v3 was going in the wrong direction because of all of the overhead... Karl tried to take every possible n00b mistake into account when doing v3 and v4... As a result, what used to be a 20kb (!!!) mod has turned into a 250kb mod, including 32kb of code just for the actual job of turning links into embedded videos... I can understand that he'd like to get rid of n00b support messages though. But it's hardly maintainable in the current situation. My guess is that it's one of the main reasons he gave up on AEVAC. He should have adopted a more restrictive policy, and/or made a paid-for version where n00bs could actually get support and ask for obscure video site integrations.

I think it's one of the better new features, if you ask me...

Hmm, that isn't the case with me. If the video is not embeddable, it comes up as "This video is no longer available" or something like that and you can't click it to go to the item.

I don't know, but it works for me with V4.

It is a nice feature for n00bs or non-techie type people on your forum. I have many non-techie people as members of my site so its useful. I do agree that a bunch of odd-ball unimportant video sites are supported and would be fine with just focusing on the top few or so. I also have no use for the embed local files features. I wouldn't put any videos worth hosting on my own server (eating my space and bandwidth) on my forum but rather on my main site/CMS.

You have to make sure that you tick the option Check whether Youtube videos are embeddable in Aevac settings.

Wow shocking, I assume someone will take over this mod then? This is the type of mod that needs a very active developer.

I'm not sure anyone will take over... It's quite a large mod, and even for people who have enough time to waste it on developing large mods for free (e.g. SMF Media Gallery in my case), it's not easy to simply "take over", as opposed to helping the original author with some portions of it.
I've been asked a couple of times to take over AEVAC, I've even considered it several times, and fact is, it seems I'm the only one who actually considers that, at all. But there are far more drawbacks to me, than advantages. (Advantage: I love writing regexps. Drawbacks: tech support. Possibly too many nasty bugs to fix. Having to add and remove video sites constantly. Living with the weight of having to maintain two of the biggest media mods for SMF. Etc...)

I still don't like the idea of seeing the mod drift away into oblivion because it's the best of its kind, but I know that I'm personally using AEVAC 3 which does a satisfying job for me, and I have absolutely no idea what AEVAC 4 is supposed to bring, except for a whole lot of shiny new bugs.
Maybe I would be less frightened to take over AEVAC 3, actually, I don't know. Are there any "real" advantages to AEVAC 4?
I could work on fixing bugs in AEVAC 4 if they're not too complicated, but I can't promise I'll take over immediately and forever. I think I can spare a few days of work on this, because right now SMG is close to the final 1.5 release and we're not seeing too many bugs so I could work on both projects next week, but after that, I'm not sure of what I'll be able to provide.

I wrote an answer to a post where it was alleged that YT video produce the "white circle of death" when using AEVAC 4.

If embedding has been disabled for a particular video, the video cannot be embedded, I believe, at all. It's not a Aevac 4 issue.

I am using AEVAC 4 and have never activated the embedding videos in quotes feature. Having no problems with pages.

I never saw that   issue. How do you provoke that error to happen?

V4 worked for me at first, and then over time I noticed that the YT videos just hang on my site.  V3 works fine, however.  May be the overhead?
