i want to keep going but i hate to be a burden (spelling?) on people. I learnt html / css / what i know of php / wordpress / smf themes, by doing it myself and not asking questions, just kept plugging away.

I would love to learn the more inner depths of smf but this is frustrating me gahhh

still getting error, i noticed the language bits i added hadn't been echo'd so i added the ', ,' around them and that didn't fix it

Yes I missed that bit. Sorry.Too many things going on at once. The language strings do need this syntax:

The reason I initially said to end it with echo ' <div>'; is because I was just pasting the actual menu section into a bare php file for quick checking and therefore it was out of context. I had to add the '; after the closing div tag to get correct syntax before the ?> at the end of the short file.

This is not correct in the context of the entire template. If you open the template itself in a code editor it should highlight this. You should see a change in the syntax highlighting straight after </div>'; which will revert to correct highlighting if you remove the ';
