Child board post notification on index

We're working on converting our boards from phpBB to SMF (lots of stuff on our efforst here: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=21252.0 ), and one of the things I"ve noticed is that unlike phpBB, there's no notification of posts in child boards on the index in SMF.

What I mean is that if you look at our current boards, like http://www.mazda3forums.com you notice a little icon next to the name of the child boards (for example, if you look at the Northeast, Mid Atlantic, etc child boards of United States from the index, you see a little icon next to each child board - it's white if no new posts, colored (tan) if there are).

Unless I'm missing something?

Of course there is! There are three pics for the boards:

no color: no new posts
light color: new posts in sub-boards
full color: new posts in the main board

Also, the child board names are bolded or not bolded depending on whether they contain new posts since the last time you went inside them, and on hover they will show information about the number of posts and topics they contain.

And you can display the new posts in the sub-board by showing the icons instead of boldifying the name, it's just a theme modification. :)

Yeah I just realized this  :-X

I think we can close this thread up, sorry guys.  It looks like the only real edit I need to make me reasonably happy to start with SMF is the last post I made in the Multiple Boards thing.  Other than that, I think we're about set to convert! :)

I'm using SMF here with the Yabb Classic theme and the "light color: new posts in sub-boards" don't seem to be workin? Any input or suggestions appreciated, thanks

I just fixed this problem with my forum (using a modified version of the YABB Classic theme).

All you have to do is open the BoardIndex.template.php file and find the following line:

<td class="windowbg" width="6%" align="center" valign="top"><img src="', $settings['images_url'], $board['new'] ? '/on.gif" alt="' . $txt[333] . '" title="' . $txt[333] : '/off.gif" alt="' . $txt[334] . '" title="' . $txt[334], '" border="0" /></td>

It should be line 98.

Replace it with the following code:

<td class="windowbg" width="6%" align="center" valign="top">';

// If the board is new, show a strong indicator.
if ($board['new'])
echo '<img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/on.gif" alt="', $txt[333], '" title="', $txt[333], '" border="0" />';
// This board doesn't have new posts, but its children do.
elseif ($board['children_new'])
echo '<img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/on2.gif" alt="', $txt[333], '" title="', $txt[333], '" border="0" />';
// No new posts at all!  The agony!!
else
echo '<img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/off.gif" alt="', $txt[334], '" title="', $txt[334], '" border="0" />';

echo '</td>

You'll also need to create a copy of the image "on.gif" named "on2.gif" and place it in the same directory.

Worked for me.
