Banning all proxy severs on smf, any ideas anyone.

Arantor

I'm working on a mod for this.

Note that you can't simply ban all proxy servers, there are simply too many. However my mod will ban the most common ones.

I keep getting people trying to access the board using different ip addresses but he's the same person, all he wants to do is post porn all over the bbs, not a happy person I am.

But SMF is still a awesome piece of software, I still love it.

Cheers

Is it a human spammer or a robot? You might find some of the stop spam mods useful too (please see the Customize link above, and search for spam)

replay

you got any useful mods you can think of, that would be just right for 1.1.10,.....robot or human.

I haven't installed any on 1.1 for months - because I use 2.0 exclusively on current projects now.

Stop Spammer (if it works on 1.1) is what I use though.

i will just have a look hang in there.

take it you on about this one, MOD Stop Spammer v2.2

After looking at the mod,..does 1.1.10 not have this embedded into it already, the activation process.

Arantor

What this does is checks the IP address and email of registering users against known spammers - and prevents them registering.

This will help prevent some of the issues you've been seeing - at least from robots doing it.

It is impossible to block proxies. There are like a million of them out there.

installed the stop spammer for the time being see how it goes.

Oh, I know. But I can write a fairly simple mod to add them to the ban list and periodically add more. The overarching point is to hit the trivially findable ones - those folk that just use Google for 'proxy' and go to the first one on the page.

Ah, I see. Well I have created such a modification as well for private use that checks port 80 for an open reply which indicates that a user is using proxy. I have tested it and it blocks 6-7 proxies out of ten.

Arantor

Oh, that's an interesting approach. I wouldn't have thought of that. Mind if I write that into a mod?

Well guys if there`s a mod to install apart from the one i have installed as per Arantor instructions,....then i will be happy to try it out to stop these proxies.

Not at all, no reason why should I mind it.

Arantor

Excellent, thanks :)

What I'll do is combine the two, I think. Ban known spammers - and also have this system in place too. It'll be a while to produce though.

That is a good idea, to combine them both. It will be more affective and I think a lot of users will find it very useful seeing how many requests have been done for such mods.

Good stuff guys, give us a shout when all is ready to install this new mod to deal with this problem!

Cheers Guys

Arantor

I'm still working on this, however as this has turned into a Mod Request (that is being attended to) I'm going to move it there, and out of support.
