Hi,

Wondering if someone can help, members are reporting that the PM facility isnt working, which I didnt notice as I use Chrome as my browser. I have checked in IE8 and when you select to compose a new PM the box below is received.

There is nothing in the error log on the forum and members say the fix is "close the error message, then when you get the "cannot display the website" page just click on your back button and it takes you back to the personal messages page, which then works!!!!"

Anyone any ideas please?

Thanks

JimM

Have you tried this in other browsers as well? IE8 is definitely not a good test.  Does this happen using Chrome or FireFox?  It sounds as if it is browser related.

I dont have a problem in Chrome or Firefox, only problem is my users mainly use IE  :(

Really not sure where to look!

JimM

IE8 is still a beta so it's possible that it will be fixed but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I believe IE8 is final now, its certainly available on windows update

NickC

IE8 was released in March 2009. It is very unpredictable, but a lot of people use it, so we don't have much choice but to make it work. Around 50% if my users use IE, and of those 36% use IE8.

KalkanPrince

94.8% of mine use IE and over 70% IE8 - becoming a big problem for me :(

JimM

Yes, what I should have said is that it should still be a beta! :P

Have you searched the forum here to see if anyone else has run across this?  I don't use IE8 so I am not familiar with it at all.

Have you tried this with compatibility mod turned on?

I just sent a test PM on my forum ( SMF 2.0 RC1.2) using IE8 and there was no error. It must be a problem with a mod you have installed or your theme.

JimM

I did the same thing as NickC on my test site and didn't have any problem either.  What mods do you have installed?

IE8 has been final for a while now.  ::) and although it still has many issues.. it is far better than any version of IE before it.
The biggest problem that most web designers / developers forget is that no matter how much you or I dislike it.. it's a fact that IE is the most commonly used browser.. so sites need to be designed to work with it.
We were not given dreams, without also being given the power to achieve them.

This is a support topic, so please don't hijack it with comments on IE without commenting on the OPs issue.

I don't see anything there that might affect the PM functionality.

Ive trawled through the SMF logs but there seems to be no errors in there

JimM

If you don't have any mods that have modified it you could possibly replace your /Sources/PersonalMessage.php file and see if that helps or the /Themes/default/PersonalMessage.template.php.

Thanks, replaced both those files but still doesnt work  :(

JimM

Can you do a detailed version check to make sure all your files are at the correct version?

Sorry been away for a while, just checked versions and they are all current :)

JimM

Are you using IE8 now and is this still occurring?  Take a look at this info:

Do any of the mods you have send PMs or use the PM system for any reason?  Are you using the default theme?

Hi,

Thanks for the link. I changed the theme from Prof back to default and PMs started working again so it must be an issue with the Prof theme  :(

JimM

Sometimes, that is the solution.  I'll go ahead and mark this one as solved.
